The lab

1 / 3

Our lab has a recording booth for acoustic recordings (sound and image recording) and for perceptive examinations (for the auditory assessment of speech data).

The recording booth is a soundproofed room in which acoustics can be recorded without disturbing background noise. The technical recording room and the recording booth are separate rooms that allow communication via a microphone and a window. In addition to conducting production experiments, the speaker's booth can also be used for perception experiments.

Image and video recordings are usually made in the recording booth using an HD video camera (or a mobile phone with UHD or 4K resolution). The lab also has a virtual reality headset (VR headset) with a built-in microphone, which is used for studies that aim to create a more realistic and natural environment.

The following hardware and software is used for sound and image recordings:
Hardware: e.g. AKG C544L condenser headset microphone, Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 (audio interface), HTC Vive, Oculus Rift S
Software: e.g. Adobe Audition, Tabletop Simulator, Open Broadcaster (OBS)

On this page you can find out more about the measurement methods and applications that are used when analysing the production of spoken language. None of the speech production methods require any special qualification for implementation/application. However, a thorough briefing of the test supervisor by the technician (Dipl. Ing. Theo Klinker) is a prerequisite for working with the instruments at the IfL Phonetics.
