Plethysmography (respiratory analyser)

In plethysmography, respiratory movements of the thorax and abdomen of test subjects are recorded during speech.

A plethysmograph is a measuring device that can measure volume fluctuations of a body part or organ and thus enables the recording of respiratory movements as well as inhalation and exhalation durations during speech production. In this measurement method, an elastic belt is placed around the thorax and one around the abdomen. An upstream measuring device is used to determine the time and extent of the expansion and contraction of the applied belts, so that conclusions can be drawn about breathing patterns and thus about speech planning.
