Research Interests

  • Experimental phonetics, Laboratory phonology
  • Modelling of typical and atypical speech
  • Prosody and articulation
  • Acoustic and kinematic measurement techniques

As an experimental phoneticians my main research area theories and methods in speech production and perception with a special focus on dynamical systems. I am investigating the interplay between phonetics and phonology with respect to prosody, intonation and articulation. Together with other researchers I have worked on the coordination of tones and segments, articulatory and acoustic marking of prominence, kinematics of syllable structure and vowel synthesis in different languages including varieties of German, Persian, Polish, Italian and Tashlhiyt Berber.

At present I am also doing interdisciplinary research with neurologists to capture dynamic properties of speech motor control in aging and disease with a special focus on Deep Brain Stimulation and Medication in patients with Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s disease (see Brain modulation and speech motor control and the related Neurospeech Conference). I am an expert in acoustic and articulatory measurement techniques including 3-D electromagnetic Articulography, and I have a strong interest in developing new techniques to capture speech patterns in typical and atypical speech from a multidimensional and multimodal perspective.

Since 2017, I am a member of the CRC1252 Prominence in Language at the University of Cologne with a project on ‘Dynamical modelling of prosodic prominence’. In this area, I organized three international workshops on Dynamic Modelling in Cologne.

I am teaching elementary acoustics, fundamentals in articulatory modelling, phonetics and phonology as well as forensic phonetics. I have written an open access book providing an Introduction to Articulatory Phonology, and I am involved in transnational teaching activities with the Université of Paris. I have also received a Labex EFL (Chaire Internationale), at Université Sorbonne, Prais France (March-June 2023).

I am an elected member of the IPA Permanent Council for the Organization of ICPhS (2023-2031).

Software

ema2wav-converter

https://github.com/phbuech/ema2wav

ema2wav is a tool for the conversion of data from electromagnetic articulography (EMA) into multi-channel wav files. The EMA data can be converted either from the command line, by executing a standalone Python script or by using a user-friendly GUI. The wav files can be opened in programs like Praat for further processing (display, annotation, measurements).

Vowel Hunter

VOWEL HUNTER is a graphic extension of the Klatt formant synthesis, based on the Klatt synthesis implementation by CMU Artificial Intelligence Repository. It is designed for realtime-generation of vowels using inverse-filtered glottis signals from recorded speech. The user interface permits the speaker (or the informant) to manipulate the variable control paramters f1/f2 by moving a cursor through a virtual vowel space. Two optional faders were also implemented for variations of f3/vowel length. The software is developed for MOA-tasks in phonetic research. The Method of Adjustments (MOA) involves the adjustment of parameters of a speech synthesis until the intended sounds is generated (see references, e.g. K. JOHNSON). Vowel Hunter was developed by Stoffel / Wilz / Mücke 1999-2000. For further descriptions see the more detailed online-help.

Speech Sounds

SPEECH SOUNDS provides reference sounds for the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The reference sounds were spoken by a German native speaker, therefore showing a clear mother tongue bias. The software was developed for students of the University of Cologne becoming acquainted with phonetic transcription for the first time. It provides a talking IPA chart for sound-symbol association and some transcription exercises (developed by Klinker / Mücke 1998).

Music & Phonetics

Sprachmusik

In the year 2000 the phonetic department launched a series of concerts combining speech and music. They were held in the assembly hall of the Cologne University and the Kunstwerk (http://www.sprachmusik.de). The interrelationsships of phonetics, poular music and modern music were explored.

MIDI-electropalatograph

The MIDI-electroplatograph (EPG) was developed with the aim of converting tongue gestures into electronic music (Heike / Stoffel / Klinker / Muecke). After midifying the EPG, it was possible to trigger a music synthesizer by moving the tongue against the palate in real-time. We also gave some experimental "singing" performances, e.g. at the 3. Lange Nacht der Koelner Museen 2002 and in Essen (Kreutzeskirche, 2001).

Phonetic journey

"Die phonetische Wanderung für Stimme und Band" is a composition of Georg Heike. The journey goes through an imaginary huge room of articulation and the vocal tract. The ear-traveller will pass lookout points like pharynx, palatum and alveolar.
