The Department of Linguistics (Institut für Linguistik) (from 2003)
In 2003, the Institut für Sprachwissenschaft merged with the Institut für Phonetik and Sprachliche Informationsverarbeitung, creating the current Department of Linguistics (“Institut für Linguistik”). In times of increasing budget cuts, this move was intended to make use of synergy effects, thus strengthening the position of the individual subjects.
The two former departments became sections called General Linguistics and Historical-Comparative Linguistics.
