Information on the Use of the Library
Opening Hours
Researching and working in our library is possible from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.
We reserve the right to close the library at short notice due to illness. You can find the current opening hours on our homepage or here.
General Information
The departments of General Linguistics (ASW) and Historical-Comparative Linguistics (HVS) of the Institute of Linguistics have a joint library. The library of ASW and HVS covers several rooms on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floor in Meister-Ekkehart-Str. 7. Only the 3rd floor is accessible to the general public. This is where the information is located, where you can contact one of the student assistants if you have any questions. If necessary, books can be brought to you from the other floors.
Borrowing Books for Students (only on weekends)
When renting over the weekend, the following rules apply:
- Since we are a reference library, borrowing is generally reserved for students of our institute.
(B.A. Linguistics und Phonetics, M.A. Linguistik/Linguistics, B.A./M.A. ASuK-HVS etc.) Please also note our library regulations (german). - Borrowing is generally only possible over the weekend. Items are available for collection on Fridays starting at 10 am and returned on Mondays by 12 pm.
- Students at the Institute of Linguistics require a green seminar card to borrow books. This card can be obtained upon presentation of a completed seminar card application and a current certificate of enrollment, which can be sent in advance by email to ifl-bib[at]uni-koeln[dot]de.
- Journals, working papers, handbooks and dictionaries ("green dot") are generally excluded from borrowing (see library regulations).
Seminar Card
Students at the Institute of Linguistics require a green seminar card to borrow books and equipment. This card can be obtained upon presentation of a completed seminar card application and a current certificate of enrollment. The seminar card can be issued by the library attendant or requested in advance by email to ifl-bib[at]uni-koeln[dot]de. It is renewed each semester upon presentation of a current certificate of enrollment.
We only need your personal information to contact you regarding borrowing. Your information will be treated confidentially and will not be shared. Please inform us of any change of address.
Borrowing Books for Employees
Employees of the University of Cologne can borrow books for two weeks. For this purpose, the contact details of the person borrowing the books as well as the date of issue and the end of the loan period are recorded on a so-called "blue loan ticket" and additionally on a digital list. The Department of Linguistics confirms the loan with a signature.
Student assistants who borrow books for their chair need a signed authorisation from the chair holder. This can be deposited at the library reception for future visits.
Equipment Rental
Students of the Department of Linguistics have the possibility to borrow recording devices or microphones during some seminars. For this purpose, early registration (at least one to two days) at ifl-it[at]uni-koeln.de and a valid seminar card upon collection is necessary.
The equipment can be rented for one day or over the weekend. Exceptions are possible by arrangement.
