Language, music and place in Délı̨nę, NWT, Canada

Language, Music and Place in Délı̨nę, Northwest Territories, Canada develops an interdisciplinary approach to language documentation. As the Délı̨nę community moves to self-government, interest in narratives, singing, and spatial concepts grows to better understand what constitutes a government. Government is therefore one of the focal points of this research. In addition, the project also includes the development of an indigenous research methodology with regard to language research. The research investigates variation, change and continuity in language, narratives, song and spatial concepts and how they relate to government and land management. The approach involves documenting three groups of families from different traditional land uses over generations, consisting of archival and new material, and dialogue with relatives from neighbouring communities with different dialects to understand the role of the place of origin in variance.
